Training Never Sleeps: How to Maintain Your Skills While Traveling This Summer

Vacation season is here. Whether you're headed to the beach, the mountains, a family reunion, a business conference, or a weekend getaway, chances are you've spent time planning where you'll stay, what you'll do, and how you'll stay safe while you're away.

But there's another part of personal safety and preparedness that often gets left behind when the luggage gets packed....training.

Many shooters, concealed carriers, and competitive shooters spend months building skills, developing good habits, and improving performance. Then vacation arrives, and those training routines disappear for a week or two. While a short break isn't the end of the world, maintaining even a small amount of practice while traveling can help keep your skills fresh and your confidence high.

The good news is that training while traveling doesn't require a trip to the range, a suitcase full of gear, or hours out of your vacation schedule. With a few portable tools and just a few minutes a day, you can continue developing the skills that matter most.

Why Training Matters Even When You're Away

Skills are perishable. Trigger control, sight alignment, presentation from the holster, target transitions, and decision-making all benefit from consistent repetition.

Vacation often removes many of the distractions and time constraints we deal with at home. A few minutes in a hotel room, vacation rental, or rental home can provide the perfect opportunity for focused practice.

The goal isn't to conduct a full training session every day. Instead, think of it as maintenance training—keeping your skills sharp so you return home ready to pick up where you left off.

Travel Light, Train Smart w Laser Ammo

One of the biggest challenges with vacation training is portability. Most people aren't packing competition belts, target stands, timers, and range bags for a family trip.

Fortunately, modern dry-fire training tools make it possible to maintain your skills with equipment that takes up very little space.

The SureStrike™ Laser Cartridge

The original SureStrike™ laser cartridge is one of the easiest training tools to travel with. Small enough to fit in a pocket, it transforms your everyday carry firearm into a powerful dry-fire training platform.

Pair it with a reactive target and you can practice:

  • Trigger control
  • Sight alignment
  • Draw stroke
  • Target acquisition
  • Movement drills
  • Reload practice

Since the system requires no ammunition and minimal setup, it's ideal for any place you head to for your vacation.. especially since often live-fire practice isn't possible.

LaserPET™ II (Personal Electronic Target)

If you want a complete training experience in a compact package, the LaserPET™ II is difficult to beat.

Designed specifically for portability, this interactive target system fits easily into luggage and can be set up in minutes. No need for high tech apps thus no internet connection is required, making it perfect for hotels, cabins, RVs, secluded vacation homes or off the grid trips.

With multiple training modes and instant feedback, you can challenge yourself while maintaining important shooting fundamentals.

Best of all, training sessions can be as short as five minutes or as long as you'd like.

SureStrikeMAG and i-MTTS Targets

For shooters looking to maintain a more realistic training routine, the SureStrikeMAGcombined with i-MTTS (interactive multi-target training system) offers another excellent travel-friendly solution.

The SureStrikeMAG allows repeated trigger presses without needing to rack the slide after every shot, making practice smoother and more efficient.

Combined with the i-MTTS, you can work on:

  • Speed
  • Accuracy
  • Multiple target transitions
  • Reaction time
  • Decision-making drills
  • Room clearing of your vacation destination

The targets are lightweight, compact, and easy to pack, making them ideal for travel.

Safe Training While Traveling

Whenever you're practicing away from home, safety remains the top priority. Always:

• Follow the firearm safety rules.
• Verify your firearm is unloaded before beginning any dry-fire session.
• Remove all live ammunition from the training area.
• Choose a safe direction.
• Ensure family members or travel companions know you are conducting dry-fire practice.
• Follow all local laws and regulations regarding firearm possession and transportation.

A few moments of preparation help ensure every training session remains safe and productive.

Your Vacation Doesn't Have to Pause Your Progress

Consistency creates confidence.

Even five to ten minutes of focused dry-fire practice each day during a trip can help reinforce fundamentals, maintain muscle memory, and keep you connected to your training goals.

Whether you're carrying for personal protection, preparing for your next competition, or simply working to become a more proficient shooter, your skills deserve the same attention on vacation as they do at home.

Because awareness doesn't take a vacation. And neither should your training.

With portable tools like the SureStrike™ laser cartridge, LaserPET™ II, SureStrikeMAG, and i-MTTS, you can train literally anywhere, anytime—and return home even sharper than when you left.
